“ … there is no point in trying to forget

for a long time still in your life

you’ll have to be looking for

such small details

you aren’t ready yet to grasp

though they do count to tell

who we really are … “

Ornella Vanoni, Dettagli

A detail is often what makes all the difference in things, tales and even in houses.  If you’re going to decorate, refurbish or build your home, you should consider that there are small details which appear to be almost insignificant as single elements – but, if you take them as a whole, they harmonise the ambience and make it unique. Visconti couldn’t help putting some coffee into the cup of the extras pretending to drink in one of his movies, although they weren’t in the foreground, they were almost invisible instead. He knew for sure that the audience would realise the cup was empty. This a perfectionist’s detail for whom nothing should be left to chance. I’ve found some pictures about details of mountain houses. A laid table where simplicity is enhanced by napkins and flowers in the same colour, not at all obvious. A round fireplace, featuring irregular shapes, embellished by the stones in the wall creating a nice relief effect. A corner fireplace, where a suspended seat made from a cold material is warmed up by the wooden walls, by the firewood piled up on the side and by a large picture divided into two different scenes featuring a wood and a man sitting down and staring. A wooden crocheted chair showing a mountain scenery can feature prominently in any space apparently insignificant and can turn it into a harmonious and spectacular environment. Colour shades, materials, the juxtaposition of cold and warm, finishes, masses and voids, cuts, sizes and occupied spaces, smooth and matter surfaces … it’s not mere details.
